On April 27, the world’s largest car carrier “BYD” made its maiden voyage from Suzhou Port Taicang Port, transporting more than 7,000 new energy commercial vehicles to Brazil. This important milestone not only set a record for domestic car exports in a single voyage, but also demonstrated the continuous improvement of Suzhou Port’s car ocean transportation capacity. The successful launch of the ship reflects my country’s determination to improve the level of the automobile manufacturing industry and accelerate the cultivation of high-quality new productivity. As an important link in the global supply chain, BYD “Shenzhen” provides solid port support for the rapid expansion of overseas markets for high-end manufacturing industries.
BYD’s “Shenzhen” ship is magnificent, 219.9 meters long and 37.7 meters wide, with 9,200 standard cargo spaces, equivalent to the area of 20 standard football fields. The ship has 16 decks, 4 of which are adjustable, and uses an advanced lifting platform system, which can efficiently mix and load a variety of vehicle models. The ship’s service speed reaches 19 knots, ensuring efficient and direct routes, significantly shortening transportation cycles and reducing logistics costs, allowing BYD’s new energy vehicles to reach global users faster and safer, and enhancing the overall competitiveness of China’s automobile exports.
Benefits of enhanced logistics and customs processing
Suzhou Port has implemented a “priority handling, fast approval” service model to simplify the export process of new energy vehicles, including measures such as “appointment inspection” and “immediate inspection” to ensure efficient loading and unloading of vehicles and smooth customs clearance of ships. These measures have minimized the time ships stay in the port and helped new energy vehicles reach overseas markets faster and safer.
Since the beginning of this year, Suzhou Port has focused on building an automobile export trade distribution center and the preferred port for new energy vehicle exports, continuously improving the aggregation and radiation capabilities of the route network, building a comprehensive collection and distribution system that integrates rivers, seas, rivers, roads, railways and waterways, providing one-stop, customized “door-to-door” logistics solutions, and further improving the efficiency of vehicle exports.
As the largest ro-ro terminal for automobiles on the Yangtze River main line, Haitong Taicang Automobile Terminal has played a key role in this growth. Since its official operation in December 2024, the terminal has exported 212,000 domestically produced automobiles. In the first quarter of this year alone, 75 ro-ro ships departed from the terminal, reaching 14 countries and regions around the world, including 11 countries along the Belt and Road. Such a wide route network demonstrates Suzhou Port’s determination to promote China’s new energy vehicles to the world.
Advantages of sustainable practices and environmental compliance
BYD Shenzhen is not only an engineering marvel, but also a model of environmental responsibility. The ship uses the latest LNG dual-fuel clean power technology and is equipped with green equipment such as efficient energy-saving main engine and high-voltage shore power system to ensure compliance with the latest environmental standards set by the International Maritime Organization. The ship design takes energy conservation and emission reduction as the primary consideration, making it a sustainable choice for transporting new energy vehicles.
In addition, the efficient loading system and protection technology adopted by BYD Shenzhen ensure the safety of the vehicle during transportation. This commitment to safety and sustainability provides stable and low-carbon logistics support for the global delivery of BYD new energy vehicles, consolidating China’s leading position in the field of green vehicles.
According to Taicang Customs data, Suzhou Port exported 147,600 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 18.35% year-on-year. Among them, 58,500 vehicles were exported to countries along the Belt and Road, an increase of 3.06% year-on-year. These data highlight the important role played by Suzhou Port in promoting the export of new energy vehicles and the development of high-end manufacturing.
In summary, the successful maiden voyage of BYD Shenzhen and the continued efforts of Suzhou Port fully demonstrate the advantages, benefits and strength of China’s new energy vehicle exports. With efficient logistics, sustainable development practices and strong support for high-end manufacturing, China is expected to continue to maintain its leading position in the global automotive market, especially in the booming new energy vehicle field.
