China’s new energy vehicle industry is accelerating its quality improvement and moving towards the new

In recent years, China’s new energy vehicle industry has entered a new

phase of rapid development, driven by both policy support and market demand. According to the latest data, China’s new energy vehicle ownership will reach 31.4 million by 2024, a more than fivefold increase from 4.92 million at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan. From January to July 2025, new energy vehicle production and sales will both exceed 8.2 million, with market penetration further increasing to 45%. This series of data not only reflects the booming market but also demonstrates China’s technological breakthroughs and industrial upgrades in the new energy vehicle sector.

Guided by the 14th Five-Year Plan, China’s new energy vehicle industry has achieved systematic breakthroughs across its entire supply chain. With pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles as the “three verticals,” the industry is developing a complete vehicle technology innovation chain. With power batteries and management systems, drive motors and power electronics, and networking and intelligent technologies as the “three horizontals,” the industry is building a technological supply system for key components. This comprehensive approach has not only enhanced the industry’s core competitiveness but also injected strong momentum into high-quality economic development.

Policy empowerment is a key guarantee for high-quality development of the industry. China has implemented a series of policies and measures to promote the research and development, production, and market promotion of new energy vehicles. At the same time, cross-sector integration has restructured the industry ecosystem. The coordinated development of charging and swapping networks and intelligent road infrastructure has provided strong infrastructure support for the popularization of new energy vehicles. Furthermore, deepening open cooperation and accelerating integration into the global value chain have opened up new space for the development of China’s new energy vehicle industry.

2. Innovation-driven and Intelligent Transformation

Amid the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, technological innovation is a key driver of its vitality. With the continued maturity of programmable cockpit technology, users can freely combine multiple functions to suit their individual needs, creating a personalized “mobile living space.” For example, when commuting, users can simply activate “combat mode” with a single click, while on weekend camping trips, they can switch to “lazy holiday” mode for a more comfortable driving experience.

The 14th Five-Year Plan outlines the need to achieve breakthroughs in key technologies for new energy vehicles, including high-safety power batteries, efficient drive motors, and high-performance powertrains. It also aims to accelerate the development of key components, including the foundational technology platform and hardware and software systems for intelligent (connected) vehicles, drive-by-wire chassis, and smart terminals. Continuous innovation in these technologies is making smart cockpits and in-vehicle software increasingly intelligent. Battery systems and chips are also undergoing continuous iteration and upgrades, pushing the logic of automotive manufacturing from “physical superposition” to “intelligent symbiosis.”

At the SERES Gigafactory, over 1,600 smart terminals and over 3,000 robots operate in tandem, achieving 100% automation in production processes like welding and painting. Cao Nan, General Manager of the SERES Gigafactory, stated, “Using AI visual inspection technology, we can complete a complete inspection of dozens of key points on a single component in just over ten seconds, effectively ensuring product consistency and factory quality.” This in-depth application of intelligent technology epitomizes the new energy vehicle industry’s drive to become more innovative and intelligent.

3. Brand Upward Strategy and Internationalization

Against the backdrop of the changing global automotive landscape, China’s new energy vehicle industry is constantly exploring a path of “brand-upgraded” development. On July 29, 2023, the inaugural meeting of China Changan Automobile Group Co., Ltd. was held in Chongqing. The establishment of this new state-owned enterprise is not only a key measure in the supply-side structural reform of the automotive industry, but also provides greater certainty for the Chinese auto industry in the face of global industrial transformation. Wang Tie, Director of the China Automotive Strategy and Policy Research Center at the China Automotive Research Center, noted that the establishment of this new state-owned enterprise will help drive resource integration within the automotive industry, optimize organizational structure, and maximize economies of scale.

To attract more international consumers, Chinese new energy vehicle brands are accelerating their international expansion. By improving product quality, strengthening brand promotion, and optimizing after-sales service, Chinese automakers hope to gain a foothold in the global market. At the same time, with the continuous advancement of technology and the gradual maturity of the market, the competitiveness of Chinese new energy vehicles is also increasing.

Against this backdrop, as a primary source of Chinese auto products, we are committed to providing high-quality new energy vehicle products to international customers. Our extensive product line and comprehensive after-sales service system cater to diverse market needs. Through close collaboration with leading domestic automakers, we will continue to promote the internationalization of Chinese new energy vehicle brands and provide global consumers with superior travel options.

Conclusion

China’s new energy vehicle industry has achieved rapid growth during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, with continued expansion in annual production and sales, breakthroughs in core technologies, and improvements in the industry’s independent controllability and green development capabilities. In the future, with continued technological innovation and market expansion, China’s new energy vehicle industry will undoubtedly demonstrate even greater competitiveness in the global market, injecting new momentum into high-quality economic development. We look forward to collaborating with more international partners to jointly promote the popularization and development of new energy vehicles.
