According to foreign media reports, Horse Powertrain, a supplier of innovative low-emission powertrain systems, will showcase its Future Hybrid Concept at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. This is a hybrid powertrain system that integrates an internal combustion engine (ICE), electric motor and transmission into a compact unit, aiming to accelerate the automotive industry’s transition to net zero emissions.
The powertrain enables automakers to combine a pure electric vehicle (BEV) platform with a hybrid system to meet changing customer needs while eliminating the need for multiple platforms and production lines. Its lightweight modular design fits on existing BEV platforms and can serve as a range extender for existing batteries, supporting all-wheel drive (AWD) mode.
Future hybrid concept cars can be powered by a variety of fuels, including gasoline, ethanol flexible fuel, pure methanol and modern synthetic fuels. Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain, said the company’s goal is to solve the biggest challenges facing automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Although pure electric vehicles have been seen as the only way to achieve net zero emissions for more than a decade, the market is now moving towards technology neutrality, with various markets and applications exploring their own sustainable travel solutions.
Giannini pointed out that future hybrid concepts will help OEMs meet this challenge. Through innovation, Horse Powertrain is able to provide a complete hybrid system that is seamlessly integrated into a pure electric vehicle platform. This compact, integrated powertrain concept enables OEMs to offer a variety of powertrains while minimizing disruption to production processes and resource costs.
The design of the future hybrid concept is a major change in powertrain production. It integrates complex hybrid components into a compact unit, significantly improving system integration efficiency. By simplifying the assembly and installation process of the hybrid system, the architecture saves OEMs a lot of resources, especially when the hybrid propulsion system is produced on the same production line.
Ragnar Burenius, chief engineer of Horse Powertrain xHEV system, said that the future hybrid concept system adopts an integrated internal combustion engine, motor and gearbox design, which reduces the complexity of the hybrid powertrain. This design makes its packaging more flexible and can be integrated into the existing BEV platform with only minor changes to the vehicle.
The compact size and geometry of the powertrain concept system is designed to replace the front electric drive unit of a BEV. The powertrain can be bolted directly to the vehicle’s subframe, enabling OEMs to offer hybrid models on a pure electric vehicle platform without major redesigns. In addition, the system is also suitable for conventional internal combustion engine vehicle platforms.
The Future Hybrid Concept system adopts an east-west layout, with a slim top and wide bottom to ensure compliance with global safety and collision standards. It is equipped with the power electronics system required for an efficient hybrid drivetrain, including controllers, inverters, DC/DC converters and on-board chargers, and is equipped with an 800V charging booster for fast charging.
The system is designed to be used and operated worldwide, equipped with a pre-combustion chamber ignition system, supporting a variety of fuels, including gasoline, E85 ethanol blends, M100 methanol fuels and synthetic fuels. In addition, the powertrain concept also covers a number of environmental and product design standards, and its compact package can accommodate the next generation of automotive heat pumps and use R290 refrigerant.
In short, Horse Powertrain’s future hybrid concept not only provides automakers with flexible power solutions, but also opens up new possibilities for achieving sustainable mobility goals.
