1. Export Boom: The Internationalization of New Energy Vehicles
With the global emphasis on environmental protection and sustainable development, the new energy vehicle industry is experiencing unprecedented development opportunities. According to the latest data, in the first half of 2023, China’s new energy vehicle production and sales both exceeded 6.9 million units, a year-on-year increase of over 40%. Amid this surge in demand, new energy vehicle exports saw a significant 75.2% increase, becoming a key force driving the internationalization of China’s automotive industry.
Against this backdrop, Xinjiang’s Horgos Port, a crucial land route connecting China and Kazakhstan, has become increasingly prominent. Horgos Port is not only a crucial hub for Chinese auto exports but also a starting point for new energy vehicle (NEV) “ferrymen.” These “ferrymen” drive domestically produced NEVs across borders, delivering “Made in China” products overseas and becoming the “navigators” of a new era.
2. Ferryman: The Bridge Connecting China and Kazakhstan
At the Horgos Port, 52-year-old Pan Guangde is one of the many “ferrymen.” Since taking up this profession, his passport has been filled with entry and exit stamps, documenting his countless journeys back and forth between China and Kazakhstan. Every morning, he leaves home to pick up a new car from a car trading company. He then drives these brand-new, made-in-China cars across the Horgos Port and delivers them to designated locations in Kazakhstan.
Thanks to the visa-free policy between China and Kazakhstan, a more convenient and flexible “self-drive export” customs clearance method has emerged. Ferrymen like Pan Guangde simply scan a unique QR code generated online by their company in advance to complete customs clearance in seconds, significantly improving efficiency. This innovative measure not only simplifies the customs clearance process but also reduces export costs for companies.
Pan Guangde sees this job as more than just a means of making a living; it’s his way of contributing to Made in China. He’s well aware that in Horgos, there are over 4,000 “ferrymen” like him. They come from all corners of the country, including farmers, herders, migrant workers, and even cross-border tourists. Each “ferryman,” in his own way, delivers goods and friendship, building a bridge between China and Kazakhstan.
3. Future Outlook: Global Competitiveness of New Energy Vehicles
As the new energy vehicle market continues to expand, Chinese brands are becoming increasingly competitive in the international market. Recently, Chinese new energy vehicle brands like Tesla and BYD have demonstrated impressive performance in markets like Europe and Southeast Asia, gradually gaining consumer recognition. At the same time, international demand for Chinese new energy vehicles is also increasing, providing ample room for further development of the Chinese automotive industry.
Against this backdrop, the role of new energy vehicle “ferrymen” has become increasingly crucial. They not only transport goods but also promote China’s brand image. Pan Guangde said, “Every time I see my car being well-received in overseas markets, my heart is filled with joy and satisfaction. The cars we drive are all made in China and represent China’s brand image.”
In the future, with the continuous advancement of technology and the expansion of the market, the path to internationalization for China’s new energy vehicles will become even broader. Both policy support and market demand will inject new vitality into the development of this industry. The “ferrymen” of new energy vehicles will continue to forge ahead on this path, becoming a major force in promoting Chinese manufacturing to the world.
As global competition in the new energy vehicle market becomes increasingly fierce, the rise of Chinese brands is not only a victory in technology and the market, but also a dissemination of culture and values. New energy vehicle “pioneers” will continue to use their passion and sense of responsibility to promote the emergence of Chinese manufacturing on the international stage.
